When we launched The Reckless Saints of Nowhere in 2015, we had absolutely no idea what we were doing. Zero. I was fresh out of rehab at a long-term treatment facility, and when I returned home, nothing looked the same. All I could see was a community in pain. The Opioid Epidemic had torn through the heart of America, and ‘overdose’ had become a household word. Everyone I spoke to said the exact same things.
Someone they knew, a friend or family member, was on drugs and had lost control. Jails were full, homes were destroyed, and families were suffering. People began asking me how I got sober and if I would talk with their family member or friend who was on drugs. You could see they wanted to help the addict, but no one knew how to do that.
So I started giving my phone number to anyone who was suffering. A simple gesture. If you or someone you know is lost in addiction, call me. Any time. Day or night. I will do anything I can to help. It blew up. Soon I had so many people wanting me to help them get clean that it didn’t take long to notice the problem. Resources. If the addict wished to get help for their addiction, they had to pay outrageous entry fees to be accepted into Rehabilitation and Treatment Programs that didn’t work.
In most cases, the addict and their families had to come up with as much as $25,000 to qualify. In return for the thousands paid, the addict would be admitted to 30-day Treatment Facilities that had about a 3-4% success rate. It was insanity. The recovery system was bleeding families dry and still offering no help. Nobody knew what to do. Out of this confusion and chaos, Reckless was born.
First, we did our homework. Research. For months we compiled data from every source and authority on drug addiction and treatment. We found Treatment Centers with high success rates and cross-checked that list with Rehabs that were inexpensive and affordable. Then we met with Intake Directors and began to build relationships. They told us about other problems they had when it came to getting an addict into treatment. There were waiting lists, financial concerns, and location issues to overcome before they could even start treating someone. Drug addicts don’t have money if they did it would be up their arm. Most of them have lost everything, (vehicles, homes, etc.) so they had no way of getting to an out of state treatment center.
Reckless went all in. We paid the first entry fees out of our pocket, and we drove wherever needed, often times across state lines, to pick up an addict and transport them to treatment. When we couldn’t afford the entry fees anymore, we worked out payment plans with Treatment Programs. My wife and I would pay $100-200 a week, and the program would admit the addict immediately. But Reckless only consisted of the two of us back then(newlyweds that both worked 50 hours a week jobs), so our funds quickly ran out. That’s when my mom and dad saw what Reckless was doing and wanted to help.
With their donations, we were able to help even more people find recovery. We were passionate and a little crazy but it was working. People were getting help and families had hope again. We helped almost a hundred addicts get into treatment in our first two years.
Reckless Apparel is a clothing company we started shortly after receiving non-profit status. Once again we had no idea what we were doing, no experience in printing shirts. But we worked hard, set up shop in our home, and after several failed attempts launched our first shirt in the winter of 2017. ‘The Original.’ Our next shirt ‘The Impossible’ followed shortly after in February 2018. Each shirt is printed in a limited capacity. After a certain amount of shirts are sold, we cease printing of that model and destroy the screens. We are always working on a new design and will be launching our next shirt very soon. 100% of proceeds from the sales of our clothing go directly to helping addicts and their families.
Our sole mission here at Reckless is to ensure that no addict who wants help for their addiction is ever turned away merely because they can’t pay for treatment. All of you that have purchased one of our shirts have aided tremendously in the effort to save lives. We have come a long way, but our work is not done. We are still in the middle of an epidemic. Our world is bleeding to death. It is our job to hold our palms against the wounds. It's been said that If you are a shoemaker and you want to glorify God in your work…don't put a cross on every shoe you make, just make a good pair of shoes. The Reckless Saints will continue to work hard at bringing you the sickest designs on quality shirts. Thanks for believing in us. We LOVE you all.
